Beginning dragged, then it picked up and finally floundered at the end. Not one of my most enjoyable reads.

Didn't care for this book, as well written as it is. Other reviews say it is a stunning novel of psychological suspense. I don't know where the "suspense" was in this novel, the events were tragic and entirely predictable. I was completely not sympathetic to the main character, an intelligent but useless Harvard graduate student. The main characters were one dimensional and all headed for doom. The only character I liked was Alma, the wealthy benefactor, and could empathize with her dilema and depression and her need to find intelligent conversation. Not a lot to think about here, just a ride along to a depressing story.
