From Library Journal
On a planet governed by harsh laws and customs, a middle-aged counselor responds to a dying man's last wish and embarks on a journey into the unknown to return a traitor's body home for burial. Kube-McDowell depicts a civilization gone quietly awry in this compelling and disturbing story of a man's recovery of his lost honor. The author of The Quiet Pools (Ace, 1990) tells his tale with spartan simplicity, letting his prose imply rather than explicate. On the basis of literary merit as well as good storytelling, this title belongs in most sf collections.

A science-fiction story set in the distant future where fertility and creativity are prized attributes.
In just a few pages Michael P. Kube-McDowell manages to create a complex, believable alien culture. He crafted his characters and setting with such vivid detail, I find myself thinking of this world often. It leads me to re-read this story yet again
