This one is really as great as all the rest of Sue Grafton's that I have read! Chock full of illicit affairs, family melodrama, red herrrings and breathtaking action,it has it all!
Bailey Fowler is a fugitive from justice, claiming innocence in the murder of a wild girl years ago but the killer could be anybody in the small lurid town on the California coast. Kinsey Millhone decides to take the case that gets in all kinds of scrapes and hairy corners!

Great case for Kinsey, though also dangerous as an almost 20 year old murder comes back to haunt a small town when the prison escapee accused of the crime gets caught under his new alias for a crime he didn't commit. Small town dwellers will love this intrigue and understand the "everybody knows everybody" politics as well as the "locked and loaded" mentality when the accused again escapes and more murders pile up!

Best selling author has her heroine Kinsy Millhone, a private investigator in California, investigating the death of a teen 17 years ago when her accused killer who escaped from prison is picked up again by the police. The escapee has led an exemplary life and claims he was always innocent. One of the author's best.

I liked how Kinsey went about digging up clues in this cold case. None of the characters here are meant to be likable, and the murderer became obvious to me about halfway through, but it was still a good puzzle. Now that I'm reading them in order fairly close together, I realize that when I read them the first time around I must have glossed over a lot of info about Kinsey. I distinctly recall that upon reading one of the later books, she pulls some shady stunt and I thought "no Kinsey wouldn't do that" - but now I see yeah, she totally would. She's more complex than I remembered.

Sue Grafton series are really good, if you have never read them you need to start at the begining. I know you will enjoy them like I did!

"Grafton has successfully replaced the raw, masculine-fantasy brutality and gore of the Parkers and Valins and Leonards with heart-pounding, totally mesmerizing suspense....She is a master at it." __The New York Times Book Review
