Red tailed hawks are interesting birds because they cannot fly when their feathers are wet. They must stretch their feathers out to dry before they can fly again. They generally soar at 40 MPH, but when they may dive for food at 190 MPH. They are very intelligent and can solve puzzles for food.

The red tailed hawk is probably the largest bird most people have seen in the wild. They have incredible eyesight. The hawks mate for life and both birds build the nest. We live in a rural area and there are lots of red tailed hawks around. We particularly like that they eat rattlesnakes. We had an infestation of snakes a couple of years ago and lots of hawks moved in to take advantage of it. Once the snakes were sparse again, the hawks moved elsewhere.
