This book was long. Very long. It could easily have been 2 unique books, as the first half focuses on John and Mary Sawtelle and their efforts to make a life on a farm with a couple of quirky friends. Most of the last half focuses on the dogs and feels like a truer prequal to The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, and was the section I enjoyed most. I thought the format of the final section made it feel like an add-on.

There were parts of this novel that were very engaging, but it also has some side stories that were distracting or did not go into enough depth. 3.5 stars, but could've been 4 stars with some trimming.
