Maybe I'm the odd one out on this novel. I think that this book does a lot of things well, like communicating the despair and hardship that comes with living with and caring for a terminally ill family member. I didn't have any complaints about the structure or the characters, but I just didn't particularly enjoy reading this book for whatever reason, hence the rating. I felt like I was observing a lot of it from a distance and felt kind of clinically emotive in certain places but didn't really connect with it. NYT Top 100 books tend to be hit-or-miss with me so I guess this one overall falls solidly in the middle of the spectrum.
I think this book will become one of my all time favorites. The story is absolutely riveting. There are so many dynamics at work here and they are all woven together perfectly. Ajay's narration is haunting. The writing throughout this book is stunning. The descriptions of things both physical and non are surprising and beautiful. It's a short book so it goes quickly. I could barely put it down. I highly recommend it for anyone who appreciates good writing or who likes a unique, compelling story.
