This is one of my favorite books, morbid but wickedly funny in a very British way. My copy is a keeper, I like to reread it every few years, but if you see it come available here, I recommend grabbing it, quick. The plot revolves around the doings in a British boarding house where the narrator lives, and also the failing publishing company where she works. If you've ever worked for a company that was on the verge of going bankrupt, you'll enjoy the descriptions of the office.
Muriel Spark speaks intimately to the reader, it's as if your best friend was writing you a letter(if your best friend was a fantastic writer). Her novels have won lots of prizes in England, and they are all short fun reads, if you like dry, slightly twisted humor.

A look at the English post-war working class through the eye of a woman widowed during the WWII. Working in publishing, living in a boarding house we get a bit of mystery and a bit of humor and a good deal of solid writing. I wanted to follow Mrs. Hawkins to the next phase of her life.
The British have a very different outlook on life and this book is another example of that. Somewhat of a \"chick\'s\" book but it was enjoyable.
I loved this book, as I was living near London in the fifties, and found it funny and entertaining. By the author of "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie".
