Wonderful book for children! I read it to my 6-yr old (all 3 books in the series) and he absolutely loved it! We have learned how to make a compass, how to make a fire, all about peregrine falcons and much more!

I liked this one a bit more than the first book in the series. I still didn't care much for the survival skills information, but I thought the adventure aspect of the story was more enjoyable than what was in My Side of the Mountain. Overall, it's not one of my favorites, but I don't regret the time taken to read it.

But suddenly, Sam's peaceful life is shattered. Frightful is confiscated by a conservation officer, and Alice disappears. To find them. Sam must leave his moutain refuge and track Alice across the Catskills as only he can do. The trail to the far side of the mountain may lead Sam to the two beings that matter most to him-or it may lead him into grave danger.

I found this book to be a nice follow-up to her first book, My Side of the Mountain. This book picks up where the first one left off. Sam's challenges continued when his family decides to return to the city, but with one less child. His little sister convinces her parents that she wants to stay with Sam for the next year, much to his chagrin. What will Sam do now with a sister who is just as free spirited, if not more, as he is? His challenges are multiplied when his sister runs away shortly after his falcon, Frighten, his confiscated by the local conservation officer . What will he do?

A wonderful sequal to my side of the mountain in which Sam Gribley is joined by his sister Alice and are enjoying the peaceful life untill a conservation officer steals Sams falcon, Frightful, and Sam is desperate to get her back. Then he finds out it was an illegal poacher who is about to sell Frightful for a huge amount of money. Can Sam save Frightful in time? Read it for yourself to find out.

This is the second of a series (starts with "My Side of the Mountain") about a boy, who is a falconer, his falcon (Frightful), his sister, and their adventures. My son enjoyed them all. They were recommended reading in his 4th and 5th grade years.
