Ten years in the future, Laura Ingalls wil marry Almanzo in the town of De Smet, South Dakota. But now, Almanzo is miles away, growing up w/his brother & sisters on his father's farm in New York.
Almanzo's chores get him up at dawn & keep him working till dinner - summer & winter. But it is fun, & it builds character. And was there ever a boy who loved horses more? Was there ever a boy w/a bigger appetite?

While Laura Ingalls grows up in a little house on the western prairie, Almanzo Wilder is living on a big farm in New York State. Here Almanzo and his brother and sisters help with the summer planting and fall harvest. In winter there is wood to be chopped and great slabs of ice to be cut from the river and stored. Time for fun comes when the jolly tin peddler visits, or best of all, when the fair comes to town.
This is Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of how her husband Almanzo grew up as a farmer boy far from the little house where Laura lived.

This was my least favorite of the series likely because I am a girl :) but I loved it too- it was nice to see the dynamics of Alamanzo's upbringing and how different families of the time lived. I read these as a wee girl and have re-read multiple times as an adult. My sons have all read this book but were not interested much in the rest.

This is the story of Almanzo Wilder as a child, who was the youngest of 4 children and he always wanted to be a farmer like his dad. None of his other 3 siblings became farmers only Almanzo. This book deals with Almanzo's life and all his chores and is an excellent picture of Farm life about 1850. Almanzo learns to take care of the animals and to gather maple syrup. His parents went on vacation for 2 weeks and left the 4 children ages 10-13 to run the farm in upper state New York. And they did. I am not sure how he met up with Laura later.
