One of Crusie's early chick lit offereings, with strong glimmers of the powerhouse writer she will become. This one is about three sisters-in-law, each coming to grips in her own way with the end of her marriage. Doesn't sound funny, but it is.

I didn't expect a lot out of this book, but it was a good read. Funny and the characters acted like real people. You know where the plot is going, but I enjoyed the ride.

I enjoy her books, light and funny, quick read.

What I liked about it: Mature characters, witty dialogue, believable relationships.
What I didn't like: plot line lagged, beginning was confusing especially with multiple characters related to one another, never really drew me in to care about anyone in this book.

"Fast Women" is a story about a recent divorcee who goes to work for a shabby detective agency, who is also recently divorced. Their relationship is stormy as she is over zealous to make her work place more efficient and he is determined to dominate. There is embezzlement, vandalism, black mail and murder to contend with but love and justice win out. The book is a little too sexy for my preference but the story itself is excellent.

Not really my cup of tea. Resides somewhere in the tiny space between chick lit and trashy romance novel. If you're looking for literary junk food, this is it.

Cruise blends a combination of likeable characters, gossipy small-town life, and a plot spiced with some steamy sexual situations into a highly entertaining read.

Cute fast read - perfect beach day book. Though this is certainly an adequate effort, I did like Jennifer Crusie's other novel, Bet Me, quite a bit better. It was much funnier, much faster, and the dialogue was much better.
Fast Women feels more like a cute romance book rather clumsily trying to integrate an excessively complex murder mystery/whodunnit storyline.
The combination does add some punch but also blurs the focus of the narrative...in addition, there's a lot of side stories involving the female protagonist's friends, which also makes the novel a little less focused than I'd like.
Also, there is this slightly preachy undertone that you shouldn't stay married if you're not happy...and that being married to controlling men, its partly your own fault if you end up resentful and unhappy because you didn't stand up for yourself and just let them walk all over you. Not that I don't agree with the gist of that, but its sort of odd to find that sub-theme in what is basically a light romance novel. The upside, I will say, is that for once, it feels like the characters, while developing new relationships, do acknowledge some part in their first failed marriages/relationships, and don't act as though they fell apart all by themselves, or the Evil Men were 100% responsible and they could have done nothing to save the marriage because the guy was an unadulterated clod. For me, I like a little personal responsibility.

This was an interesting book. It had a lot going on in it. At times I wondered what else could happen.
liked it a lot. would love to see a story about the hero's business partner
Much to my surprise, I found this to be an hilarious, thoroughly entertaining book. The characters are well drawn and unpredictable, while the plot takes so many unexpected twists and turns that I was always being surprised. I would have thought that this kind of book wouldn't be to my taste, but it definitely caught my fancy. Give it a try, you might be surprised, too.
I really enjoyed this one. Crusie is great.
A fun fast easy read.
Very fun read, just like all of Jennifer Crusie's books.
Funny, fast paced book with excellent characters in really great storylines! A really good read!

Jennifer Crusie is a great summer read.
Another funny summer read from Jennifer Cruise. Her name on the cover pretty much guarantees an enjoyable book.
Another fun Jennifer Crusie book.
Funny, mystery-romance.
This was a fun book for me to read.
Standard chick lit - but entertaining nonetheless.
4 Audio Tapes, Approx 6 hours.
I just received this book on Friday...it didn't even make it to Sunday. Fun and fast read. Loved it and laughed out loud several times.
Very good book.
Love, love, love Jennifer Crusie. So smart and funny. We all know the feeling after a break-up just as we all know the feeling when things start to have color again.
Light read.Interesting mystery.Reminds me of Evonovich style of writing.
Cute Read!
Cover is getting a bit shabby, but still a great read!
Very good - funny, suspenseful, sexy, what more could you want?
New York Times Bestseller. Suspense mixed with romance. Lots of colorful characters with good development. Approx. 400 pages.
entertaining
I struggled with the first third of this book because it was a bit slow starting, but it picked up speed and finished well. Good characters that were thoroughly developed but the plot was a bit thin. could have been longer and more complex or about the same without quite so many characters.
Not a quick read, but by the time I finished it, I loved the characters and wished it wouldn't end. Easy to get into the story from the first page. Detective agency with a nod to Sam Spade type detectives meets woman bend on organizing everything she sees. Funny and neurotic, but enjoyable to watch people work through their marriages, divorces and goals on the way to figuring out who they are and what they want. Lots of romance and laughs, bad guys you'll love to hate. I need a sequel now.
Another good Crusie novel. Solid and enjoyable characters and a laugh out loud plot. This is my third book by this author and I'm looking for more!
Nell Dysart's in trouble. Weighed down by an inexplicable divorce and a loss of appitite for everything, Nell is sleepwalking through life until her best friend finangles a job for her with a shabby little detective agency that has lots of potential and a boss who looks easy to manage.
Gabe McKenna isn't doing too well, either. His detective agency is wasting time on a blackmail case, his partner decided he hates watching cheating spouses for money, and his ex-wife has just dumped him...again. The only thing that's going his way is that his new secretary looks efficient, boring and biddable.
But looks can be deceiving, and soon Nell and Gabe are squaring off over embezzlement, business cards, vandalism, dog-napping, blackmail, Chinese food, unprofessional sex, and really ugly office furniture, all of which turn out to be the least of their problems. Because shortly after that, somebody starts killing people. And shortly after that, they start falling in love.

Good J. Crusie book. Some are more enjoyable than others.
Great book. You can't help but fall in love with Jenny's characters and lives.
Thought that this book was great once I got past the first chapter or two. Perfect read for the beach or a long train ride. A quick and easy read.

Excellent book by a fantastic author. I have read all of Jennifer Crusie's books. This was funny and romantic.
Good story.
A laugh out loud funny story about people learning not to settle for anything less than the zing in life.
I loved this book. It was very funny and got me addicted to Jennifer Crusie.
A fun read.
Easy, Funny Read
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read.

Very good book!! funny, exciting, great characters!!

Crusie is a great author
Kind of differant, but very entertaining.
All of Jennifer Crusie's book have a little intrigue and romance. They are a fun, quick read.
Compared to Crusie's other novels, I thought this book was rather slow. The characters are good, nice and messed up, which makes them believable and fun. But it really dragged on too long without really getting anywhere. I could see that she was trying more daring/thrill stories which she does exceedingly well later, but the execution here was plodding and slow. I could recommmend it as a first book, but not after better ones like 'Bet Me', 'Agnes and the Hitman' or 'Faking It'.
Wow! My first read by this author and NOW I must get more! Easy to read, I chuckled out loud a few times and I couldn't put it down til it was finished!
Very entertaining romantic comedy with an interesting mystery. More substantial that some of her later books.
Very good read...didn't want to put it down.
A detective agency may be a sure setting for mystery and adventure, but in Crusie's latest (after Welcome to Temptation; Crazy for You; Tell Me Lies), a likable cast of characters also find sex, love and empowerment. At 42, recently divorced Nell Dysart starts a new life by becoming a secretary for Gabe McKenna, a gruff private investigator la Sam Spade; McKenna runs an old-fashioned family business in German Village, Ohio, with his cousin and partner, Riley. The new job provides distraction for Nell, and with the support of her china-collecting former sisters-in-law, Suze and Margie; her son, Jase; and a stolen dachshund named Marlene, she gets back on her feet. Gabe is less than thrilled with Nell's sassiness, and they clash over her attempts to clean and redecorate his office. But where there is friction, there are also sparks, and as bull-headed as Gabe and Nell are, they finally acknowledge their mutual attraction. To make things more complicated, Gabe's biggest client is the Dysart clan, Nell's former in-laws, and the history between them becomes confused with present investigations of embezzlement and bribery when Nell discovers the title to a Porsche and a bag of diamonds in her boss's office. After more than one character is found stuffed in a freezer, Gabe, Riley, Nell and Suze set out to solve a 20-year-old murder case. Crusie's snappy dialogue and skillful plotting more than make up for some uneven pacing and one-dimensional villains. The novel's provocative title says too little about this entertaining romantic caper, which will satisfy fans and new readers alike.

Crusie expands her usual chicklit screwball romance here to include some mystery elements, but the whole thing remains pretty frothy.
When divorcee Nell Dysart takes a "temporary" job in the offices of McKenna Investigations, the last thing she's looking for is a new romance. So of course sparks fly between her and her boss, mostly because she wants to "fix" things he thinks don't need fixing.
Great fun, hot sex, and an occasional dead body on the plus side; a complicated set of family connections on the minus. Still an entertaining read.

A divorcee and a detective find out that falling in love can be murder.
From Amazon.com:
Emotionally numb from her divorce 18 months earlier, Nell Dysart is about to waken with a vengeance. When she takes a job as office manager for McKenna Investigations, she's determined to reorganize, redecorate, and revamp the stuck-in-the-'50s surroundings, but she runs smack-dab into senior partner Gabe McKenna, the immovable object to her irresistible force. Gabe likes the dated ambiance just fine and doesn't want a thing changed, but he soon learns that nothing in his life is going to stay the same now that Nell has arrived.
Rough and gruff, but with a heart of gold, Gabe is just what Nell needs to jump-start her hormones. Nell's formerly dull life is suddenly wildly active, for not only is she lusting after Gabe (and vice versa), but there's also a case of embezzlement to uncover, a dog to steal, and bribery to investigate. And, oh yes, there are those very cold, very dead bodies in the freezer.
Fast Women has well-rounded characters, an interesting mystery to resolve, and author Jennifer Crusie's trademark humor. In addition, Crusie gives readers a little something extra in her exploration of the emotional stages of divorce, the viability of marriage, and the value of self-honesty--all of which add up to an excellent fictional tale layered with a thought-provoking look at contemporary culture.
