Parallel stories of two siblings from an Indian family--the older sister caught up in restrictive traditions at home and the younger brother confused by the permissive life lived by his foster family in America. The characters are believable and vital; the book gently satirizes both traditional Indian and current American cultures.

This book provides the reader with insights into two very different cultures - in the first half we are immersed in an Indian family's life, and then we get to view our own culture through their son's experience here.

A novel of an Indian family (in India and in America), I found this book a little too sad for my taste. The main female character lives a wasted life in many ways, unfulfilled as she missed out on her expected social role: a suitor rejected her, a marriage had to be annulled, and she never married again, considered to be "unlucky". Her brother, the baby of the family, led a pampered yet restricted life and finds life in America (at college) difficult.
