This first volume of the series calendars assignments of land recorded by the federal land offices in the territorial districts of the U.S., exclusive of war bounties and land company sales, ... more »from about 1788 to 1810, during which period the United States land patenting procedure was first being organized. Volume 1 is arranged as follows: a chronological series of land abstracts which calendar the variety of documents consulted by the author, a name index of some 8,000 names, a subject index, and a tract index. Although the majority of the patents pertain to land in the Ohio Territory, this volume contains entries for each of the following district land offices for the period under investigation: Canton, Chillicothe, Cincinnati, Dayton, Marietta, Steubenville, and Zanesville, Ohio; Kaskaskia, Illinois; Jeffersonville and Vincennes, Indiana; Detroit, Michigan; East Orleans (New Orleans), Louisiana; East of Pearl River (Fort St. Stephen); West of Pearl River (Mississippi Territory); and Nashville, Tennessee; as well as the General Land Office in Washington, D.C. Volume 1 also contains a number of folding maps, which pinpoint the locations of all tracts under the jurisdiction of the Ohio district land offices. (See Volume 3 below.) Volume 2: 1799-1835. Revolutionary War Bounty-Land Warrants of the American Revolution. This volume furnishes evidence of Revolutionary War military service inasmuch as it indexes all names appearing in the summary registers of the General Land Office pertaining to grants of land in the U.S. Military District of Ohio for the period 1799-1835. It also includes lists of some of the bounty-land warrants exchanged for scrip. The tracts located in the calendar are shown in a map included in the volume. Contains an index of 10,000 names and a separate index to the tracts in the Military District. Volume 3: 1810-1814. A Calendar of Archival Materials on the Land Patents Issued by the United States Government, with Subject, Tract, and Name Indexes. The third volume in the series resumes where the first volume left off and proceeds to 1814. The arrangement is similar: the calendared lists give the names of the settlers (mostly to Ohio), and their assigned tracts, and they are followed by three indexes, including a name index of more than 10,000 entries. The tracts can be located by referring to one of the fifteen maps included in the volume. In addition to the land offices represented in Volume 1, the researcher will find abstracts recorded in the following district offices: Huntsville, Alabama; Shawneetown, Illinois; West Orleans (Opelousas), Louisiana; and Washington, Mississippiing the location of the tracts enables the researcher to inspect county records for more complete information. A Calendar of Archival Materials on the Land Patents Issued by the United States Government with Subject, Tract, and Name Indexes. Parts 1 & 2: Grants in the Virginia Military District of Ohio. Unlike previous volumes in the series, this final volume concerns the non-federal land grants made by the state of Virginia to her Revolutionary War veterans within the Virginia Military District of Ohio (the land lying within the triangle formed by the Ohio, Scioto, and Miami Rivers). Arranged by survey number, each entry lists the acreage obtained, the watercourse upon which the land is located, the county and township location, the warrant number and the name of the warrantee, the patentee, and the names of any others who settled on any part of the land. Indexed by name, county and/or township, and watercourse. More than 22,000 persons are identified in both volumes.
