This is the 1st of two books on the McCalls. The 2nd is Dark Fire. The senior McCall wishes to ensure a dynasty so he causes much trouble by arranging women most of whom are interested in his money) to show up around Rye. He meets Lisa who is testing grass seed in McCalls Meadow and falls in lust with her. She does not know who he is and falls in love with him and they begin a steamy affair. When he finally realizes he loves her too he has told so many lies he doesn't know if their love can be saved.
