This was a wonderful book that I almost stopped reading! The family suffered a great tragedy in the beginning and these days I can't take much sadness, so I put the book down, not intending to finish it. Well, it stayed on my mind, so I started reading it again, and I'm so glad I did. It is the story of a Mennonite family and their journey to America from Russia in the 1800's. They have to overcome difficulties, sadness, and anger through patience and the grace of God. Fields of Grace is written by Kim Vogel Sawyer, an author I enjoy.

If you like a book with detailed descriptions, this may be the one for you. The author puts great pictures in your brain with many words to make you 'see' the characters and situations.
But beyond that, I found the book dull and frustrating- the major scenario that takes place on the boat is shocking, but I found that this part lacked depth of emotions. The rest of the book, as I said, is great in detail, but not much action. I did realize that things were much different back then, and while I wanted to yell at the characters- "TALK TO EACH OTHER", I realized that's not how it was done. Good for a beach read, but def not in my top ten of my favorite books.

The story is filled with excitement and intrigue from the very first. Also, a story of love and caring. I could hardly lay this book down until I finished it. You'll love this one
