Finding Serenity AntiHeroes Lost Shepherds and Space Hookers in Joss Whedon's Firefly - Smart Pop
Author: Jane Espenson (editor), Glenn Yeffeth (editor)
In this eclectic anthology of essays, former cast member Jewel Staite, "Kaylee," philosopher Lyle Zynda, sex therapist Joy Davidson, and noted science fiction and fantasy authors Mercedes Lackey, David Gerrold, and Lawrence Watt-Evans contribute to a clever and insightful analysis of the short-lived cult hit Firefly. From Wha...  more » to What's right about Reavers? and how the correspondence between the show's creator Joss Whedon and the network executives might have actually played out, the writers interrogate the show's complexity and speculate about what might have been if the show Firefly had not been cancelled.

Some interesting things here, but don't look for explanations of Firefly or the verse. Instead, this is analysis of things about the show - it's writing and creation - rather than discussion of show contents. If you're a hard core Firefly fan, you'll probably want to read it. If you don't know what the show and movie were, then this isn't the book for you.

This is a great collection of essays on that wonderful show Firefly. I suppose only rabid fans would appreciate it, but this makes me want to watch it all over again and suffer once more over the fact that one of the best creations for television was cruelly cancelled (damn Fox to hell). My favorite was the first one by Larry Dixon, but there were I think 3 others that I thought were way off base, which I did not agree with at all, which is the reason I only give this book 3 stars. Fans will definitely enjoy the piece on Chinese phrases, those with a musical bent will certainly appreciate the in-depth analysis of the score, and I particularly liked the one on Zoe as well as the one the marriage of Zoe and Wash. It's a fun celebration of a great piece of work that lived too short a life.

Another excellent collection of essays from Smart Pop! This collection of essays span a huge range of subjects from hilarious parody to deep philosophical ponderings. Some of these essays explored ideas that I'd had myself (though much more coherently!) and other essays I vehemently disagreed with. Either way, they made me think. And best of all, they reminded me just how much I love this 'verse!
