Don't get scared and bolt, schoolgirl. I won't attack you, Luke said in a low voice. Carla's head came up proudly. "I never thought you would>" You must have thought it once, he shot back, because you ran like hell and stayed away for three years.(first page in book)

I enjoyed the storyline and the characters, I had read Granite Man and wanted to catch up on the MacKenzie family. Love the descriptions of the land, ranch and mountains. She really makes the scenes vivid in your minds eye. I am finding that I don't like the continuous litany of self doubt and reasoning that was expressed on nearly every page. We readers aren't stupid and don't have to read it over and over to keep us in the know.
This is a quick, angst filled read. It is a keeper for me and one of the reason I started to read this author.
loved it!
Really enjoyed the story line in this book and made me want to continue reading about the characters. Too bad there isn't a continuance of this book to continue reading about their lives. Very good book..read it in a couple hours!
Number one in the MacKenzie/Blackthorn series.Luke and Carla's story.

I have recently discovered Elizabeth Lowell's stories, thankd to this wonderful site. This was not one of her better novels. It seemed to lack substance. Still a good story but not as good as her newer ones. Istill plan to read all others in this series.
Get ready for an emotional roller-coaster ride that sizzles from beginning to end. Lowell has set this romance on a lonely ranch in the Rockies. Luke MacKenzie, a ranch owner plagued with a family history of women deserting the ranch, is determined break the "curse." Carla McQueen, beautiful, a great cook, his best friend's sister, is the love of Luke's life. Joyce Bean brings the mix together with steamy romantic scenes and stormy fights in a husky tone that accentuates the smoldering fire beneath the surface. Once Bean gets the narration going, it develops a life of its own, burning everything in its path with her scorching phrasing and breathless recitation.
Luke MacKenzie, owner of the wildest, lonliest ranch this side of the Rockies, hadn't laid eyes on Carla McQueen for three years. Not since the day he'd sent his best friend's kid sister storming from the Rocking M Ranch and out of his life-for what he thought was forever...
Now Carla was back, lovlier and even more desirable than in his burning memories. But Luke knew he could never give in to the raging need to make her his woman. For he'd made a vow long ago--one he was determined to keep--that he would never fall in love with an innocent beauty. No matter how badly his body and soul ached for her...
