Death Gate Cycle book 3.4 of 7. A very well written fantasy series of a future of the Earth where magic has sundered the world into 4 new worlds, each completely different. Each book stands alone to a large extent but each also tends to build onits predecessors.
I love this series. I just finished this one and immediately picked up book 4.
Haplo and Alfred arrive on Abarrach and are in for a scary surprise...kind of like waking up in hell and in a bad dream! An interesting twist to necromancy....
In this book, You really start to see the character's hearts and feel compassion for them both!

This is fantasy amped up a notch and it is great. I read all seven and have just posted them all. I loved each and every one. Great, memorable characters and adventures galore. Weis and Hickman are legends for a reason.
The third in an excellent series. We find learn a lot about life on this world after the reign of "humans" have ended.
I have read Weiss and Hickman for over 40 years. Most are truly great and there is a reason they are legends in the genre of fantasy as far as Dragonlance type goes. This series is my probable all time favorite and has been on my keeper shelf for many years. There it stays. I still say, twenty years later, that I thought Haplo's dog was going to turn out to be a deity of some sort... Wrong guess, but the series is still there in my head all these years later. Seven great ones. Read them. Book one is Dragon Wing.
Abarrach, the Realm of stone. Here, on a barren world of underground caverns built around a core of molten lava, the lesser races -- humans, elves, and dwarves -- seem to have all died off. Here, too, what may well be the last remnants of the once powerful Sartan still struggle to survive. For Haplo and Alfred -- enemies by heritage, traveling companions by necessity -- Abarrach may reveal more than either dares to discover about the history of Sartan... and the future of all their descendants
