Philip Connors is an excellent writer. He writes on his experiences as a Lookout employee with the US Forest Service. I was previously employed with the US Forest Service so I found the notes and the nonfiction story very, very interesting. The author loves the wild Forest, the charms of solitude, the animals that roam and the excitement of a fire. This book would be particularly interesting for those that love the outdoors, the excitement of a fire and present and past employees of the US Forest Service and possibly the National Park Service.

For the most part, this was an enjoyable book. The author, at times, gets too wordy and goes off on other subjects that are not pertinent to the theme. I felt there was a spirit of criticism without reason for going there. For those who are informed about natural sciences, it will be a good read, but for the uninformed, it might skew their outlook on some of the ideas presented.
