Navajo Tribal police officer is murdered and Lt. Jim Chee catches the Hopi eagle poacher in the act. So why is retired Joe Leaphorn searching for a missing female biologist in the same area? Maybe the skinwalker knows.

I love the way Hillerman weaves Navaho and Hopi traditions into a murder mystery, and this book is a prime example. Jim Chee is now Acting Lieutenant, and Joe Leaphorn has retired. But, of course, Leaphorn can't resist a mystery...

A good read.

Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn. PBS did a good job of telling these stories; but the book has much
greater dimension. A gritty story with touches of
humor placed in the Navajo nation.

This book features Acting Lt. Jim Chee and retired Lt. Joe Leaphorn. Chee is working on the murder of a Navajo Police Officer and Leaphorn is working on finding a missing woman who went missing on the same day and in the same area as the Police Officer's murder. The two end up working together to solve both mysteries. Even though Chee is sure he already has his man.

Where has the scientist gone? Who killed the police officer? How is the young Hopi man involved?

Each answer brings us several more questions.

At a simple easy pace we follow the clues and the intuition of both Chee and Leaphorn as they practice the fine art of sleuthing.

Mr Hillermans ability to paint images in ones mind as we travel the dusty back roads and quiet far reaching countryside of the resevation is, as always, a practiced art that is pleasing and enjoyable.

This one seemed to take forever to get off the ground. Leaphorn is retired and bored and agrees to take a private eye type search for a missing wildlife biologist while Jim Chee has second thoughts about the man he arrested for murdering a Navajo Tribal Police Officer.

I really love the way Hillerman pulls together the Navajo (and Hopi) traditions to solve a mystery. I kind of felt sorry for Chee, this is the second time he's thought he had a murderer dead to rights only to have Leaphorn wander by and pull out some conflicting evidence. The plague story is quite interesting too, I did not know there were so many agencies involved in investigating that. I used to live where you'd hear about it now and again, always seemed so odd.
