First in the Family is Jessica Hoppe's memoir about her personal journey with alcoholism and her family's history with the disease. She also shares statistics about factors that impact her family. The title reflects her status as the first in her family to seek treatment.

The writing is honest and vulnerable, and I was surprised by the interaction that led the author to acknowledge her addiction. Ms. Hoppe also shares an insider's view of Alcoholic Anonymous and its biases against people of color. She has overcome so many challenges to build a happy and healthy life.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio for access to the audiobook powerfully narrated by the author.
