These heroic cadets fired at a union ship as it attempted to reinforce Fort Sumter with 200 U.S. Army combat troops, supplies, and ammunition. Within 3 weeks, six other States joined South Carolina in secession and formed the Confederate States of America. On February 9, 1861, exactly one month after Citadel Cadets fired the first shots, former U.S. Senator, Jefferson Davis from Mississippi was selected President of the Confederacy.
