Older Tony Hillerman, before Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn, I believe.

This is a very different Hillerman book - at first, I didn't think I'd like it but I ended up getting really involved in the plot and the people. The protagonist is a likable guy. He is a reporter that stumbles on a story that he thinks is anything but! Stay with the book - you'll get hooked until the end.
Helpful Score: 1
Not your usually Tony Hillerman, i.e., this one is not set in the SW desert, does not feature Chee or Leaphorn. Instead, it is the story of a newspaper story, it's origin, its researching, its political ramifications, its consequences for the newspaperman author. There are some awkward jumps from reality to the story in the newsman's head, but once you become used to the unique style Hillerman uses for this one book, it flows. Good read.
this is a great book, always wished I could be " a fly on the wall" in many situations..so very true to life...
Not as good as others but good nevertheless, October 19, 2005
Reviewer: C. Langton "clwrites"
I did finish the book staying up until 1 pm. If you are a fan of Hillerman, then you do want to read this book. The two "chased by the bad guy" scenes in the book, one in Santa Fe and the other in the Capitol, are worth the price of admission. They are pulse quickening and vivid.

A different sort of Hillerman
I love Tony Hillerman so all of his books are great to me.
By the author of the very popular Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee mysteries set in the Southwest. This book is not a part of that series, though.
Ace reporter John Cotton is a fly on the wall -- seeing all, hearing all, and keeping out of sight. But the game changes when he finds his best friend's corpse sprawled on the marble floor of the central rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. Suddenly Cotton knows too much about a scandal centered around a senatorial candidate, a million-dollar scam, and a murder. And he hears the pursuing footsteps of powerful people who have something to hide ... and a willingness to kill to keep their secrets hidden.
