This book was an excellent testament to how true love and determination can overcome even the most daunting circumstances. A poignant, well-researched book highlighting many tried-and-true love stories during the Civil War era--relationships that were illegal, frowned upon, and challenging from the word go. The chemistry between the couples is awe-inspiring and the love, loyalty, and faithfulness to love no other brings a smile to the face and warmth to the heart.

Fans of Civil War volumes will enjoy this side-by-side with romance readers, as will anyone who believes that true love is more than skin deep; it's also colorblind and crosses all cultures.

Uplifting and amazing stories, most of them unrecorded before except in family histories, of the struggle for freedom and the power of love that inspired some former slaves to return to the South repeatedly to help their loved ones find freedom too. Quick, fascinating read!
