The Forgotten Seamstress by Liz Trenow develops the story and characters of Caroline and Maria one in 2008 and one the early 1900s. Caroline is researching the origins of her grandmother's quilt, and Maria is an exceptional young seamstress committed to an insane asylum for a large part of her life. The character of Maria and her story, especially as told using an interview format, makes this book memorable.

historical fiction that goes back and forth in time with Caroline in 2008 and Maria the seamstress who is being interviewed in 1970 and telling her life story particularly at the time of WWI. At that time she worked as a seamstress at Buckingham Palace. She made a quilt which Caroline ended up inheriting and having questions about the story it told. She is trying to decipher that story and the history behind the quilt at the same time she is dealing with a mother with dementia, the loss of her job and a new romance.

Above-average story of a woman investigating the origin of an unusual and beautifully made quilt, and the seamstress who had completed it while committed to an asylum.
