The Forgotten Seamstress by Liz Trenow develops the story and characters of Caroline and Maria one in 2008 and one the early 1900s. Caroline is researching the origins of her grandmother's quilt, and Maria is an exceptional young seamstress committed to an insane asylum for a large part of her life. The character of Maria and her story, especially as told using an interview format, makes this book memorable.
