This was what I consider a hyped up book.
It was a pretty good fast read.
It is really sad that the author didn't take the time to actually develop the characters and the storyline better.
The characters have NO depth, no back story, no future story, no nothing. If they die you are not emotionally attached to anyone since you don't know them.
Same for the back story and family histories. What a lost opportunity the author missed in making this a a spectacular book instead of a hyped up book.
It is the Hunger Games with dragons themed book. Even the very last line on the last page screams Hunger Games. Was really disappointed in see/reading that.
Since I am not really vested in the characters I don't think a book 2 is necessary for me to read.

I thought this was a really fun page-turner, as long as you are okay with a high body count. Violet is off to battle college where her distant mother is a commander. Her country is at war and it is the norm for many classmates to die before graduation. Violet is medically fragile and works harder than most for her chances. If dragons, sex, secrets, and family issues sound like a good mix this is a good choice for you.
I hesistated to read this because although the length is daunting, I was also put off by the "romantasy" tag. I don't read a lot of fantasy, and imagined that this would be a bunch of people in cloaks running around casting spells and kissing. Although there was some of the latter, I found this to be a fully engrossing adventure with likeable characters and lovable dragons. I will be reading the next entry soon and pre-ordering the third.
