Helpful Score: 3
A Southern suspense novel about a woman and all the havoc she can cause. A great book.
Helpful Score: 2
Very Siddons: The good and the not so good are clearly identified yet still a surprise at the end. I enjoyed reading it.

This was an evil good read.

Twisted ambition at its "best."
Good book!
A lusty Southern saga, this Gothic extravaganza of greed, madness, and murder, is a wicked brew, passionate and perverse. Unlike most of this genre, it's also psychologically astute and excellently written.
Just didn't like this one much. I do love Siddons, but this just wasn't her best, IMHO.
This is an excellent book with a lead character you can't help but despise. Ruth Yancey Fox is pure evil!
Anne Rivers Siddons writes wonderful books for the beach. You can get lost in her stories.
A bit over the top but Siddons remains a wonderful author.
Fantastic story ! Couldn't stop reading this one. A wee bit different for me but loved it. You truly will laugh, cry & get angry. A good read for sure...it's all there. Defintely a great woman's book.
It's an old Anne River Siddons, and a little lengthy, but if you stick with it, it's a good light read.

She was special.
That's what Ruth Yanceys worn out mother told her every day of her life. And Ruth was beautiful, with a fiery splendor that rose above her squalid Georgia mill town roots.
It was those looks, and her imbred belief in a powerful destiny, that led Ruth to the most exquisite mansion in Sparta, Fox's Earth.
Through insinuation, manipulation and an impenetrable evil, she became its mistress for three generations..with masterful precision, she broke her descendants hearts and bled their souls..until another woman, not of her blood, not of her station, attempted to match her madness...

Loved it.
A compelling character drama about a horrifyingly amoral young beauty from the wrong side of the tracks who seizes control of a great southern estate, only to find her position suddenly threaten by another women, possibly even more corrupt then she is.
A real page turner
A good book to take to the beach. Kept my interest til the end.
A passionate southern murder saga
Slow at first but then I couldn't put it down.
Siddons is always a good read!
not as good as some of her others
Written in 1981.
The first time Ruth Yancy saw Fox's Earth--the magnificent Georgia estate of the wealthy and privileged Fox family--she was a child who had known only poverty and abuse...yet she knew in her heart it would someday be hers. Years later, as Ruth Yancey Fox, she would enter its gates, vowing not just to live there, but to rule. And in the decades to follow she would pursue her dream with a vengeance--dominating everyone and everything under her roof. For nothing and no one would ever take Fox's Earth from her--no matter how much scheming and subterfuge was required...or how many lives she had to cruelly destroy.
Ruth Yancey was only a small child the first time she saw Fox's Earth, a magnificent three-storied Georgia house that was home to the privileged Fox family. The daughter of a mean, poor mill worker, Ruth vowed that someday she would not only live in such a house, but rule it as her own.
Years later, becoming Ruth Yancey Fox, she does. For decades she will dominate Fox's Earth and its inhabitants with evil manipulation, cruelty, and lies. Until eventually, even she realizes that her secrets will have to come out . . . .
