My impression is that perhaps this book is intended for the teen market as the narrative is quite strange and appears unrealistic for the era. I gave up after the first few pages; there are some inconsistencies, e.g. drinking coffee (this would have been tea at that time). Also someone gave a person "a hard time", not a phrase used then.
