For fourteen-year-old Sheryl, traveling from Brooklyn to see her mother's family down south has always meant good times and long days of freedom. But this year Sheryl is old enough to have her eyes opened to a different reality. In Brooklyn, she never had to use a special "Blacks Only" water fountain, or ride on a separate bus.
