Back Cover: Sheryl feels free in North Carolina--but it's become a prison for her family.

For fourteen-year-old Sheryl, traveling from Brooklyn to see her mother's family down south has always meant good times and long days of freedom. But this year Sheryl is old enough to have her eyes opened to a different reality. In Brooklyn, she never had to use a special "Blacks Only" water fountain, or ride on a separate bus. Her Uncle Pete has begun to protest against the way blacks are treated down south--but the more he does, the closer he comes to losing his life. When Sheryl goes home, she's determined to help Pete however she can, but even as she does, she wonders if she will ever see him again. Does death have to be the price of freedom?
