Set in New Orleans in the 1990s, this mystery/romance has it all -- an exciting venue, a mysterious murder, a controversy (corrupt televangelists), sex and romance. The heroine is compelling, and her love interest is passionate. I thought I knew 'who done it,' but a twist at the end surprised me! This is a fun read by one of the best authors of the contemporary mystery/romance genre.

Claire Laurent will fight hard to make her mail-order lingerie company, French Silk, a world-famous success. Brought up in New Orleans' French Quarter by her sweet but mentally distracted mother and an eccentric aunt, Claire is a Southern mix of gentility, iron will, fierce loyalties, and hidden fears. Then when a TV evangelist attacks French Silk's erotic-fantasy sleepwear as sinful and vows to ruin the company, she faces losing everything that matters to her, and naturally becomes the state's prime suspect of the preacher's grisly murder.
Entangled in the case is hard-driving D.A. Robert Cassidy, who is falling in love with Claire even as he is increasingly convinced of her guilt... Yasmine, the gorgeous model who puts French Silk in the spotlight while placing herself in a compromising position with a married man... Josh, the evangelist's bitter grownup son who has been getting even by sleeping with his daddy's young, pretty wife... and Ariel, his new stepmother herself, whose big blue eyes shed poignant tears for her dead husband even as she schemes to take over his TV ministry.

Drawn deeper and deeper into incriminating lies, Claire would become a desperate woman. In the grand old Fairmont Hotel, in the shady streets of the Quarter, and in a secluded rendezvous, she was keeping secrets and evading questions to which she dared not give answers. Cassidy was determined to discover why, and yet protect Claire in the process. But the chilling truth Claire worked so hard to hide and how far Cassidy would go to shield her are just two of the shockers in the startling climax of this edge-of-the-seat tale of love and suspense.

Good mystery, murder, who dunnit, and until the end it was not apparent who the murderer was. All indications had you hoping a great sacrafice did not have to be made to protect an innocent, and then the culprit was disclosed. Very enjoyable read.

This one started out pretty slow...3/4 of the way through it was moving along and was good.

This book is about a women who owns a lingerie company. She finds herself the main suspect in the murder of a televangelist who has tried to shut down her company from the pulpit. Of course, the Assistant D.A. who is trying to find the murderer falls for the main suspect, the beautiful Claire. There is sexual tension throughout the book as Mr.Cassidy tries to prove that Claire didn't kill the evangelist, but all the clues point to her. A good book from Sandra Brown.

Publishers Weekly
Set in atmospheric New Orleans, Brown's ( Breath of Scandal ; Mirror Image ) latest highly entertaining novel again demonstrates her mastery of the romantic suspense genre. When evangelist Jackson Wilde is murdered in his hotel room, handsome, driven district attorney Robert Cassidy has a long list of suspects. At the top of it are Wilde's young wife, Ariel, and his son, Josh, who have been having an affair. But soon the main suspect is Claire Laurent, the owner of the lingerie company French Silk, whose sexy catalogue Wilde targeted in his campaign against pornography. Claire had a motive; she had collected and then hidden an extensive file of clippings on Wilde and she had attended his service the night he died. Cassidy has one problem with fingering her as the villain: he is falling in love with her. Claire, who battles childhood memories of life with her mentally unstable mother, protects herself by building emotional walls to keep him out. Other characters, including Claire's best friend and business partner, Yasmine, guard their own secrets, which may or may not be related to the murder. Despite occasionally stilted and didactic dialogue, the novel is adroitly plotted and sleekly paced, and has just the right mix of menace and sex to keep pages turning.

After recently re-reading this book, I felt the need to urge others to read it too. If you like a mystery that keeps you guessing, a love story that sizzles, a leading lady who is as smart as she is sexy, and a hero who defines the meaning of the word - then this is the novel for you. Claire and Cassidy leads a cast of well-crafted characters, that will keep you eager to turn the page and find out what comes next. Unfortunately for us readers,(as with all Sandra Brown's books) the endings come way to quickly, and you have to shift your imagination into overdrive to keep the story going in your mind past the final chapter. "FRENCH SILK" is a fantastic read. Set against the colorful and captivating backdrop of New Orleans, Ms. Brown weaves a tale of mystery, suspense and an unforgettable story of romance and family loyalty. Claire will stop at nothing to protect her fragile mother from an unforgiving world, her best friend from the perils of loving a married man, and the company she founded from the ravings of a religious fanatic. Cassidy is her perfect match. He is looking to solve the case of the decade, and trap a cold-blooded killer - even it it means investigating the woman he could'nt help loving. Don't let this one slip by you ! Pick it up today and enjoy ! And if you've already read it,is'nt it about time you had the pleasure again ?

UNDERNEATH THE INNOCENCE LAY DESIRE...SECRETS...MYSTERY AND THE SENSUOUS TEMPTATIONS OF FRENCH SILK

New Orleans businesswoman Claire Laurent has made a name for herself and her company, French Silk. But Televangelist Jackson Wilde is attacking French Silk, saying the erotic sleepwear and catalog are sinful. When Wilde is murdered, Claire becomes the prime suspect. Assistant District Attorney Robert Cassidy is drawn to Claire, even though he can prove everything she tells him is a lie. He can't save Claire unless he reveals the secret she has been keeping her whole life.

This book is hard to put down. It's good suspense with interesting characters including Jackson Wilde's trophy wife, Ariel; his son, Jason, and beautiful French Silk model, Yasmine. The only problem I had with the story was Claire continually making up lies and thinking no one will see right through them. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
