In light of the Beijing Olympics, I decided to pull this book off my TBR pile, and I'm glad I did. Not as hilarious or acerbic as Bill Bryson, Evans nonetheless brings the tastes and aromas of China to life (both good and bad,) while traveling around China by train, bus, and boat. I would have liked a little more detail about the sights she saw, but overall this is an excellent and often funny travel book, with just enough historical information to leave you wanting to read more about this still-enigmatic and mysterious country.

A humorous travel adventure of an experienced traveler in China on her own. It gives you a good look at today's China, with all its contradictions. Armchair travel at its best.

This was a great read...I was amazed at how disgusting some places were, almost sounds like you would want to be wearing a biohazard suit when traveling!

A pretty typical account of a westerner travelling in modern-day China. The air is bad, the Chinese expectorate...a lot. Evans doesn't really contribute anything new to the great raft of China travelogues written in the last ten years.
