Colored smells? Words with taste? Letters and numbers with individual colors? This is the "curious but uncommon form of multisensory perception known as synesthesia." This is the first book I have read about this fascinating condition. The author covers the subject in depth. He even discusses his theory about the evolution of spoken language. I really enjoyed this book and I even thought it would be fun to experience such a phenomenon. The last sentence in the book helped me realize how wrong an idea this is when he so beautifully wrote, "Whatever else synesthesia tells us, it tells us that our own way of sensing the world is precious even if we don't literally...hear blue-croaking frogs." A challenging and fun read! D.
