Being a fan of the old west, pioneers, the American Indian life, and how people could survive in the treacherous previously uninhabited wilderness, and the development of the old West into the new west, I found this book an excellent choice for the collector of frontier publications, for children doing book reports and learning how America came to be. Hundreds of black and white photographs seem to come alive, the more I read into the story. Shows what daily life was for the original pioneers, and the trader, the miner, and farmer and rancher. Mining camps to marriage, Spanish speaking southwest emigrants from Mexico, African americans and multi-ethnic families all clashed and many came together for the greater good. Tells of tools, livestock, housing, dress, recreation, daily chores, cultural pusuits - it's all in here. Also represented are mining camps, churches, schools, shops and saloons. Frontier hospitality to hardships endured on the grueling journey west by wagon train, stagecoach, steamer, railway, and handcart.
