I had put off reading this book because I wasn't sure if I would like it. But since it was about the Sioux and South Dakota [my home state] I decided to give it a try. It is well written with a lot of history worked into the plot. Certainly gives a clear understanding of what the Sioux and other Indian tribes had to endure from the white man when their lands were taken from them. The love story between the two main characters would have been very difficult in real life, but you can't help but cheer them on as they face opposition from all sides.

From the back cover:

Some loves are forbidden...and some cannot be stopped.

When sheltered missionary Evelyn Gibbons arrived at the South Dakota reservation, the last thing she wanted was to fall in love. Yet from the momen she clashed with the man they called Black Hawk, she knew that the fierce Sioux brave was everything she desired...and all she could never have.

Living in the hills with his young son, Black Hawk revered his people's traditions and despised the white man's ways--until he vowed to make Evelyn his woman. But even as treachery and hate threatened their lives, a stormtide of passion was sweeping them to a place of no return...and into the savage heart of a love that would join them forever.
