I dearly love Mma Ramotswe and her friends and family. This series is one of the real joys of reading.
One bit of free advice: If you can, get at least one of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series on tape or CD and listen to it. The rhythm of the language--even in English--and the pronunciation of the names are fascinating and add to the enjoyment. (After all, how do you really pronounce "Mma"? You'd never guess it right by yourself.)

I love this book. I have read, re-read it, and will probably do so again. The premise is interesting, the characters are so well done that I feel as though they are friends. I am also drawn to the authors' description of Africa. He obviously loves it, and draws you into his love. I look forward to more in this series, as well as trying out some of his other series as well.

I really love this whole series. Precious Mamotswe is a wonderful character, very calm and methodical. Like Jane Marple, she uses her knowledge of people and intuition to solve the mystery.

Precious solves several problems, gives advice that is unheeded, and has several surprises. I love the common sense solutions and the insight into human nature that is expressed in Smith's book.

I love reading this series of books...getting to know each character better, learning more about their past, families, people. And I love reading about Botswana and it's culture, especially the old customs and manners and morality. For this book number 5, I won't tell you about the cases Precious investigates, but I will say that Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni is duped into doing a parachute jump for publicity by the bossy Mma Potokwane, matron of the orphan farm. He never seems to be able to tell her "no" but Precious finds a way to get someone else to take his place. In the end, he takes a different big jump, by finally getting married!

I really like all of these #1 Ladies' Detective novels. I don't know anything about Africa besides what I see in the news and these books seem to show a little slice of everyday life. I like how low-key the stories are too. The characters are all so lovable.

This 5th book of the series really has no mystery to it whatsoever, but it is still a charming cozy armchair trip to Botswana. Mma Ramotswe has been asked to look into 4 suitors of a middle-aged rich woman, to find out if they want to marry her only for her money. JLB Matekoni has been coerced by orphanage matron Mma Potokwane to do a parachute jump for charity, and he has also discovered that a rival garage has been cheating its customers with shoddy work. Mma Ramotswe is also starting to become restless as JLB has not yet set a date for their wedding and doesn't seem inclined to work on it. Mma Makutsi is now earning enough money to move to a better house. Life in Gaborone goes on at its leisurely pace, and is as delightful as ever.

Another great story by Smith, this series is such a joy to read. Learning about Botswana and its' people has been great fun. There is historical fact as well as fiction, all mixed together in a great series. The African outlook on life is fun and interesting.

These books have such an easy flow of languague and action. I often wonder if the Gabornian people are so polite to each other like it is depicted. I love the way they talk to one another. I did not find the storylines in this book as intriguing as some of the others but I did like the happenings at the end.

The #1 Ladies Detective Agency is set in Botswana, where Mma Ramotswe has opened the first woman owned detective agency. It is knowing human nature that allows Mma Ramotswe to solve her cases. This is a down to earth book, that allows you to think you could actually do the same thing she is doing. Very believable characters. I have enjoyed each of the books in the seies so far.

IT MOVES AT A LEISURELY PACE, MUCH THE SAME AS THE OTHERS IN THE SERIES. IF YOU ARE CAPTIVATED BY THE STYLE AND STORY OF THE CHARACTERS IN THIS SERIES , YOU WILL ENJOY THIS BOOK, TOO.

Returning to the world of Mma Ramotswe in Botswana, I reveled in her investigations and empathized with her frustration with her long engagement to Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni. Having recovered from his depression, he finds himself coerced into jumping from a plane to earn money for the orphanage. His fears grow until he begins thinking about his will since he is certain the jump will be his last act in life. All this has been orchestrated by Mma Potokwane, matron in charge of the orphanage. It is Mma Ramotswe's efforts that help him through this dilemma yet he still is unable to commit to a wedding date. Mme. Ramotswe is engaged to investigate four men who want to marry a famously rich lady. She is afraid many of them only want her money but Mme. Ramotswe loves this kind of case where she can discern the truth with her intuition. A fun, relaxing read indeed.
