This is an oldie, but goodie. Very detailed, clear instructions. Besides the 'regular' instructions to refinishing, also tells you how to avoid buying 'fakes', how to spot repairs when buying antiques. Also includes how to repair, almost any kind/type of damage to any kind/type of finish or wood. Good section on history of finishes, furniture styles, wood grains/patterns and characteristics. Funny too. I highly recommend this book over most of the 'current' glossy photo refinishing books you find today. The information does not go out of date, and there is much more background and detail offered here by George Grotz. If you are a DIY-er, this book needs to be on your shelf. 5 stars!

This book is very well written, with an easy and entertaining style. The author covers all you need to know about furniture repair, restoration and upkeep. Highly recommended if you are looking at working on furniture.

There is probably no more basic, practical, book out there on how to repair a finish or completely redo the finish on any kind of furniture. You can skip all those expensive paint stripper/removers if you can work outside and do George's way! Just be sure you watch a few episodes of Antique Roadshow first to be SURE you really want to refinish that early wide plank cherry 1800 blanket chest (thanks Mom, it was worth a fortune before you stripped it! On the other hand the old finish didn't look so good with my initials scratched in it). There are lots of other ways to do it but I always start with the methods in this modest little volume!
