Fuzzy Nation, Scalzi's reboot of H. Beam Piper's classic Little Fuzzy: loved it.
Scalzi is already one of my favorite authors, and Fuzzy Nation certainly doesn't disappoint. It's a charming story and a quick read as well. Scalzi has a talent for stripping away the stuff that really doesn't matter, and concentrates on his characters and the relationships they form. The story here has exactly enough exposition to provide a satisfying backdrop to the drama playing out in the characters, but never grows so large that it seems a character in itself.
And what a lovely cast of characters. The main protagonist, Jack Holloway is supposed to be a curmudgeonly expedient prospector with an underlying heart of mostly gold... Though really, he seems like a nicer guy than Scalzi was aiming for. Which is hardly a bad thing: Holloway is a lot of fun despite being nicer than he should be.
In any event: loved the book. 5 out of 5 stars.

I love the Jack Holloway character and Scalzi's writing style. He keeps you turning pages and it is hard to put down. This is a good story based on H. Beam Piper's earlier work titled "Little Fuzzy" (which I have never read so I have no idea how it compares). There were some sad and upsetting events, but it does end well. I'm a baby when it comes to sad and upsetting, otherwise I would have given the book 5 stars as it is a wonderful story with endearing characters.
