  He has a nickname.
G-Dad. He is my Granddad.
No way to explain.

He always loved me.
Even now when he is sick.
I miss him so much.

Even though he is here,
He actually isn’t.
Where has his thoughts gone?

Alzheimer’s.
You have seen it happen before…
“Buy Why” Is all you can think.

Simply why him?
You never thought it would be him.
Always helping us.

Anyone truly.
Always watching us.
It came so fast.

Sometimes I don’t remember.
I don’t remember homework.
He doesn’t remember.

Why us? Why him? Why?
Why did his mind drift away?
How do you say it?

Someday we will.
Didn’t think this soon.
I don’t wanna say it.

But what if it was?
It could be today. Who knows.
Nobody knows.

So we must take this.
It’s an opportunity.
To say “I love you.”

Granddad, I love you.
Please don’t leave anytime soon.
But I love you so.

And it’s always true.
All the time I love you.
I’ll love you forever

A beautiful way to preserve the essence of your grandfather is to write- journal your memories of him, your laughter, the lessons he taught you. The smiles and the funnies and the things that just you two have shared. His memories may be faltering, but you can help keep them safe while he is unable to keep for himself. Have patience and understand that it is far more difficult for us to see those we love drift away, than for those experiencing. Offer soft hugs and kisses when he does not understand-for the gift of affection is universal. Love and peace to you, Susan.
