Fast paced, Jack Higgins writing. The period is the end of World War II in the Channel Islands. The main character is Owen Morgan, from the Channel Islands who is asked to return home on a special mission. British Intelligence feels that the Germans in charge of Owen's island will try to continue the war, even though Hitler is dead and Germany has surrendered. Owen must return home to save his town, and his love, from Nazis trying to extend the Reich's end. Sargeant-Major Steiner, a loyal German, caught up in Hitler's Third Reich, is a character from other Higgins books.
This is a quick, easy read with loveable, and hate-able characters. It shows that the power of war changes some people for the worse and brings out the best in others.
I hope you enjoy this book, Higgins is one of my favorite writers. I have read this book a couple of times.

very good
Loved this book. It is a good read.
The days of the Third Reich are numbered - but on an isolated island outpost in the middle of the English Channel, the German army has vowed to fight to the death. Under a brilliant, ruthless S.S. commander, the Nazi invaders have turned the once-peaceful island into an impregnable fortress. The mission of Owen Morgan, British soldier of fortune, is to lead a ruffian band of hardened commandos onto the island in a bold move that could destroy the enemy once and for all - and destroy themselves as well.
Suspense piles upon suspense... good exciting story
I picked this up for a summer read a few years ago. I wasn't expecting much, to be honest, but it delivered a lot more than I anticipated. Fast-paced plot, cardstock characters (but in a good, pulp-fiction kind of way), and an interesting story. Looking for a book for the beach? This is a good one for sitting in the sun and vegging out to some rays.
A WWII suspense thriller about a British commando leading a high risk mission to destroy a Nazi fortress on an English Channel island prior to the Normandy invasion.
The Russian army batters at the gates of Berlin. British troops are poised to cross the Elbe. The war in Europe is almost over but on the Channel Islands lying between Britain and occoupied France, a die-hard Nazi garrison holds on. The Islands have the strongest fortifications in the world, 40,000 men and a secret underwater weapon devastating in its simplicity. The Nazis' intention: keep the conflict raging, even after the surrender of their own high command.
English operative Owen Morgan must link up with an American force perilously unsuited for commando warfare at is cruelist and dirtiest. He must regain the critical alliance of his beautiful, long ago lover who's literally in bed with the enemy. Most of all, he must elude the vengeful wrath of a fanatical German officer, who's sworn his sould to an empire already consumed in flames....
Who or what makes a hero?
Typical Jack Higgins.. He is my favorite author. He can only write a book that holds you from the beginning to the end
