Great collection of folk stories collected by Zora Neale Hurston. This book also has a great biography of Ms Hurston.

This is a quite scholarly book, but one can skip around and read her writings from the turpentine camps, etc. if desired. Pamela Bordelon offers an excellent presentation of Ms. Hurston's work, starting with a biographical essay. Endnotes and index.
In addition to Turpentine, I myself found Citrus Industry, and Two Towns especially interesting. She offers nice turns of phrase: "People ugly from ignorance and broken from being poor" is her succinct description of those who follow the winter vegetable crops.
The Ocoee Riot offers another sad example of Black people not being allowed to prosper.
