The second in a series in which I did not read the first.
I picked it up at the book store after the 3 books I actually wanted were not on the shelf yet, but thought with Candace Camp I would be okay.
I was okay, but only okay. The plot was very predictable and the romance was ordinary.
A lazy almost-rake is thrust into a family position of authority as multiple situations occur which force him to make decisions. All the while a new chaparone (the heroine) is catching his eye, and eventually his heart, as he sees her personality and abilities while also dealing with the unexpected turns (which frankly are excessive in my opionion).
The story does tie together nicely at the end though, and leads to book three which I AM excitedly awaiting after reading the excerpt.
I wouldn't buy this one, but that may be because I didn't have anything invested by not reading the first?

This is such a fun new series, I had a blast reading it, like the fun characters, light hearted playfulness and the storyline was quick paced. A great read.
It's an alright book. It follows the same story pattern as the first. But still good to read.
Love the book and the author. Have read may books by her and will continue to look for new titles to enjoy.

From the back cover...
Married young to a charming but improvident army officer, Eve Hawthorne was widowed with little except for a few extravagant trifles. Desperate to avoid her domineering stepmother, she accepts employment as chaperone to the Earl of Stewkesbury's American cousins. Who better than a levelheaded widow to remind these young girls that they no longer live on a frontier? But when she flirts with a handsome stranger who turns out to be the earl's brother Fitz, Eve worries she's given the wrong impression. Trying to prove herself responsible-with Fitz challenging her at every turn-is hard enough, but a blackmailer with an interest in Eve's prior marriage proves far more troubling. With the earl away, Eve can turn only to Fitz for help. But dare she confide in him, when getting too close to this confirmed bachelor might risk her heart to his alluring ways?
