I was completely intrigued by the title and cover of The Gentleman's Confession by Anneka R. Walker. I love a dapper fellow on the cover of a Regency romance ... is he the gentleman referenced in the title, and what does he have to confess?
This is Miles and Jemma's story. Best friends since childhood, he's the vicar and she's a bluestocking aspiring fashion designer. Each has more-than-friends feelings toward the other, but (of course) they don't reveal them for various reasons. This story has so many emotions - humor, longing, disappointment, frustration, joy, and love.
It's clear how this romance will end, but the journey the characters take had some surprising turns which held my interest. I read this when my job was extremely stressful, and it provided a wonderful escape from reality. I especially enjoyed a comedic situation where several female parishioners were clamoring for Miles' attention, and Jemma had a unique way of rescuing him. There were a couple of instances where turns of phrase felt too contemporary, but I'm sure the author researched her dialog thoroughly.
Even though this is book 3 of the Matchmaking Mamas series and the first I read, I wasn't lost, and now want to read books 1 and 2 so I can thoroughly enjoy book 4, Ian's story!
