Lord Winston Lockwood is a disappointed barrister. The realities of his profession have caused him to doubt his career choice. He is also aggravated that his family's nearest neighbor (Mattie Bawden) is at the Lockwood estate more often than he likes. He must stay at his family's home to protect his aunt and her son from her ne'er do well husband, Isaac, who is causing trouble.

Mattie Bawden is facing her problems; her uncle and aunt have died of fevers in India, and their only daughter (Franny) is now part of their family. Because of the deaths, Mattie's father has become a viscount. He has been a vicar for years, and the family must move so he can take his place in society.
There are enough elements in this story to keep it interesting.
