Gerda lived under German occupation in Holland. After being sent to the Vught Concentration Camp in 1942, Gerda was placed in a special group organized by Philips Electronics of Eindhoven to manufacture radio tubes for the Nazis. On May 1, 1945, after surviving Auschwitz and several other concentration camps, Gerda, as part of the "Philips Group," was rescued and sent to Sweden to recuperate. Her memoir ends with the recounting of her 1946 emigration to the United States.« less
