Fascinating history of a handful of scientists at the turn of the last century who attempted to study the paranormal using standard scientific method. Unexpectedly (to me) even-handed, the author does not advocate for her point of view, but tells the story as it happened, with enough background on the researchers to make clear their prejudices. This isn't a book of ghost stories, so if you're looking for that, look elsewhere. This is a well-researched history and also a very good story.
