This is a really good read. Nicely developed characters and side-stories. Much, much better than "Murder at Madingley Grange" which was rather disappointing.

Well-liked Dennis Brinkley is killed by a malfunctioning replica of a trebuchet, a medieval catapult war machine. His death is declared an accident. His good friend Benny is convinced he was murdered, and pesters Inspector Barnaby to investigate. After all, Dennis was not only an expert on these machines, but also extremely particular about them. Barnaby dismisses her concerns at first, but changes his mind after a medium is murdered just before she was to reveal the name of Dennis' murderer. Suspects begin to emerge slowly during the course of the book.

Great read!

Caroline Graham is like Agatha Christie incarnate but in her own wonderful way! Just like Christie, she takes you into the minds of the various characters in her stories and you keep thinking about what is happening in the book after you've had to put it down for a spell. No sneaky surprises with things not revealed in the book, just a savvy understanding of human nature and the dark side it can often gravitate toward.

This is a Chief Inspector Barnaby mystery. It takes place in a peaceful English village haunted by secrets and murder.

I enjoyed the book very much.

an English mystery set in a small village with good characterization (the victim is a mild-mannered attorney who collects medieval war machines) and an interesting puzzle

After watching the British series, I was curious to see if the books were as good. I was pleasantly surprised. This book was a complex murder mystery with entertainingly funny parts and a great surprise ending.

A fan of the Midsommer Murders television series, I wanted to check out the books that inspired the series. I was very impressed. In this book, at least, the author is actually more focused on the various characters connected to the victim than she is to Inspector Barnaby. Barnaby shows up relatively late in the novel and then comes and goes while the characters involved go through all sorts of trials and tribulations, only to show up at the end to clear up all the messy details. It reminds me a bit of Father Brown, who goes unnoticed for most of those stories. The book is quite funny as well. It makes me want to continue reading the rest of the Barnaby novels.
