Civil War re-enactors trying to relive the past call up things they have no concept about and are in a serious fix when things get out of their control. The main characters, past and present, are depicted each in their own chapter and the story switches back and forth in time from the present day to the Civil War days in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee.
An intriquing and entertaining tale told in present time by "Rattler" a Cherokee descendant with the gift of sight while in the Civil War days, the story is told from the point of view of the main characters.
A good read especially if you like ghost stories but, this one is based on real facts. Light romance, no sex and not heavy on the gory details.

I loved this book. It gives a very different view of the Civil War, how it affected certain southerners...namely North Carolinians. Shows a way of thinking not usual in Civil War novels. It somewhat reminds me of Cold Mountain, although the story is so very different. And, like many of McCrumb's books, this is loosely based on fact.
Sharyn McCrumb's stories, but just couldn't seem to get into this one. It was just too slow for me. I picked it up more than once & finally decided not to keep on plodding through it.
This is the first book of hers that I haven't cared for. A little too slow going. However, she did a great deal of research, and others will probably like it a lot.
One of Sharyn McCrumb's best, it weaves a story of the past in with current Civil War battle re-enactors. Very absorbing.
I thought this was a very good book and could not put it down until I finished it.
Civil war reenactors gathered in the Appalachian mountains to stage the lesser- known skirmishes of the conflict.
Hard to find a better writer than Ms McCrumb, especially this Ballad Series of my beautiful mountains!
Excellent choice for Civil War buffs. Very well written. AAA+++
For Civil War buffs this book is a treasure. The plot, the writing style--fascinating!!
Would have been a great story without the ghosts. They add nothing to the story but confusion. Overall I enjoyed the book as a civil war fictional history story, but the ghost part of it seemed to be rather random and added little to the overall story line. Definitely did not need to be the title of the book.
Civil War reenactors have gathered in the Appalachian Mountains to stage the lesser-know skirmishes of the conflict. Jouning them is a part-Cherokee mountain man Rattler. He is gifted with the ability to see spirts--and cursed with the knowledge that the players are conjuring up the restless souls of the actual soldiers who fought and died during the war...
I'm a big Sharyn McCrumb fan. This pariticular book is somewhat different than her usual writings but still a a very good read.
Civil war reenactors gather in the Appalachian mountains. One of them is a part Cherokee mountain man who can see spirits.
Slow to get into but great once you get into it. Story of Civil War reenactors that have gathered in the Appalachian Mountains to stage the lesser known skirmishes of the conflict. Joining them ia a part Cherokee mountain man who is gifted with the ability to see spirits.
I loved this book!
loved it
This was excellent historical fiction about the divided loyalties of mountain dwellers in the south during the civil war. This is connected with present day reenactors through a ghost story. The historical story is based on actual people and the book includes photos of two of the main characters. History was truly brought to life in this book.
Historical, supernatural drama.
Civil War reenactors have gathered in the Appalachian Mountains to stage the lesser-known skirmishes of the conflict. Joining them is part-Cherokee mountain man Rattler. He is gifted with the ability to see spirits - and cursed with the knowledge that the players are conjuring up the restless souls of the actual soldiers who fought and died during the war.
Back in the 1860s, when the Civil War reached the North Carolina mountains, real-life Zebulon Vance, a self-made man and Confederate governor, fought for the interests of Appalachia within the hierarchy of the South. At the smae time, local residents Keith and Malinda Blalock became union guerrillas. With a ragtag army of conscription dodgers behind them, the Blalocks waged their own war - taking revenge against a regime responsible for ruining the homes and lives of mountain folk.
And in these ancient hill, old hatreds never die...........

Civil War reenactors are stirring up the spirits of the soldiers who fought and died during the War.
This isn't my favorite book by this author. But she's a good writer, and I'm sure someone else would like it. I just wasn't in a Civil War mood.
Mccrumb is an awesome writer!
Not my favorite but I did like like it
