This is a review of the unabridged audio version of this book.
First, I have listened to all the other books by Preston and Child ... so far I have listened to the first 2 CDs of GIDEON'S SWORD and I have to say I miss Agent Pendergast. Gideon just isn't doing it for me so far... maybe the story will get better as it progresses. It doesn't seem like the story was written by the same authors. The first part of the storyline is sort of rushed through to get to the second part. It is kind of hard to believe that Gideon learned all these survival and combat skills on his own and now he can take on any adversary (at least Pendergast had some training with other agents).
I will update my review as I make my way through the CDs.
UPDATE: I still haven't finished listening to all the CDS (that tells you something right there, usually I want to hear all of them right away)
So far I haven't warmed up to the main character, Gideon. Agent Pendergast had a sad childhood but in the stories where he was featured, he did nice things for people. He seemed to care for others. Gideon's father was killed when Gideon was a boy, but there is nothing that I found likeable about Gideon. The authors have not given much background on Gideon except the part about his father and that Gideon spent some time in his past robbing museums.... So I guess I really don't care what happens to Gideon, so I don't really care for the story.
OK I finished listening: There were some action parts that reminded me why I loved the previous work of Preston and Child but I never was able to warm up to the character of Gideon. Most likely I will read the next book in the series and hope that I like it more than this one.

This was a book that took longer to draw my attention. It was an enjoyable read and had some excitement. It was not as enjoyable S other books by the same authors.

I usually love this writing team but this one was not a favorite - it wasn't bad, just not really good. The book was long on details and short on substance. It was interesting enough that I'll hang in with this series through the next book to see where things go, but this one is not of the quality I usually expect from these authors. I agree with the other reviewers that I do not feel invested in the main character Gideon just yet.
