Historical note- The background of this novel is authentic history. In 1036 six hundred followers of the Atheling Alfred were indeed murdered on a hillside near the town of Guildforde, for which the ancient name was Gildenford. Alfred himself was kept a prisoner by King Harold Harefoot and later died of ill usage. Both Alfred's mother, Emma, and Earl Godwin of Wessex appeared to be implicated, although to what extent will always remain a mystery.« less
