This is a beautiful memoir from the author of many beloved children's books. Beverly Cleary has such a wonderful way of capturing the emotion of memorable childhood moments. Readers who love "Ramona" will see that Cleary lived the inspirations for some of the precocious girl's misadventures. The memoir starts with Cleary growing up on a very rural working farm in Oregon, and follows her move into the "big city" of Portland, her family's struggles through hard economic times and how she found her passion for writing. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed this book - Beverly was from Portland (now resides in CA) and so am I - I grew up seeing the streets that she mentioned in her Ramona, Henry and Beezus books. There's even a park with statues of her characters. Read about the woman who created some of our most well known and beloved children's characters.
